Pope Leo XIV makes phone calls to Putin and Zelenski

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV spoke by telephone with President Vladimir Putin on October 16 and President Zelenski on October 19 to address the humanitarian situation in Oleshky. In this area, 1,700 people are without access to food. The location belongs to Ukraine but is under Russian control, and both sides have blamed the other for the situation.

The calls followed diplomatic efforts by Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher and Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, who both traveled to Ukraine and Russia. During a trip to Ukraine in June, the request for the Pope to intervene was presented to Cardinal Zuppi. After receiving approval from Pope Leo XIV, the cardinal obtained an agreement from Putin for a meeting that took place on October 16.

A humanitarian ceasefire was announced on October 23, beginning this past Tuesday.
