Pope Leo XIV opens Diocesan Assembly in Rome

The Pope opened the Diocesan Assembly in Rome on September 18, 2026. During his address, he used the biblical encounter between Mary Magdalene and the risen Christ to set a direction for the diocese.

He asked why people are weeping and whom they are seeking, suggesting these questions apply to the Church and the city. He noted that these questions reflect an anxious search for hope found within parishes, gatherings, and daily life.

While acknowledging the work of parish communities, associations, and movements in evangelization and charity, the Pope also recognized struggles within the diocese. He noted that some people experience bewilderment because they feel they can no longer find where to meet the Lord.
