Pope Leo XIV receives Special Olympics delegation

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV met with a delegation from Special Olympics on Saturday, September 19, at the Vatican Apostolic Palace. The meeting took place in the Clementine Hall.

During the audience, the Pope spoke about the educational value of sports and how they instill noble values in people. He noted that participating in sports requires serious commitment and hard work, which allows athletes to share the results of their perseverance through loyalty, trust, openness, team spirit, and courage.

The Pope described how athletes demonstrate the beauty of these qualities to competitors, spectators, and those they meet in daily life. He also referenced a previous message from Pope Francis regarding sport as a universal language that overcomes cultural, social, religious, and physical differences to unite people.
