Pope Leo XIV sent a message of condolence following the death of Archbishop Richard Daniel Alarcón Urrutia of Cusco, Peru. The archbishop died at age 74 after a long illness.

In a letter to the Archdiocese of Cusco and to Lizardo Estrada Herrera, the pope described the deceased as a selfless pastor who dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church. The pope expressed a desire to pray with the clergy and the faithful during his upcoming visit to the area.

The death occurred two weeks before the pope is scheduled to visit the region on November 15. Estrada Herrera was appointed to Cusco in August.
