Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV's surgeon says he can travel to Latin America

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV is medically cleared to proceed with his scheduled trip to Argentina, Uruguay, and Peru from November 6 to 17, according to his surgeon, Professor Stefano Margaritora.

Margaritora, a thoracic surgeon at the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital Foundation, told Vatican News that there are no clinical reasons to cancel the apostolic journey. The surgeon, who operated on the Pope on October 13 to remove a malignant lung adenocarcinoma, stated that the Pope's blood tests were normal and his heart function is fine. The procedure involved removing the lower lobe of the Pope's right lung, a discovery made accidentally during routine abdominal examinations.

The Pope is currently recovering at the Vatican after being discharged from Gemelli Hospital last Saturday. While he participated in the Angelus this past Sunday, he will not travel to his usual Monday residence in Castel Gandolfo during this recovery period. Margaritora expects the Pope to reach full physical recovery within approximately ten days.
