Pulmonary Adenocarcinoma: Pope Leo XIV's Receives Lung Cancer Diagnosis Following Surgery

Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma following surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic, according to a Vatican statement.

Surgeons used a video-assisted technique to remove the lower lobe of the pope's right lung. The 90-minute procedure ended without complications, though the pope remained in the operating room for approximately three hours. An examination of the tissue during the surgery confirmed the cancer diagnosis.

The Vatican reported that the pope woke up normally and returned to his hospital room on the tenth floor. He was alert and spent the night well. Medical staff will conduct further postoperative tests and analyses on the removed tissue in the coming days to complete his medical assessment. The Vatican has not stated if the pope requires additional treatment.
