Society of Saint Pius X appeals to Vatican against schism decree

The Society of Saint Pius X has filed an appeal with the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith against a Vatican decree declaring the group in schism. The society submitted the appeal on July 11, nine days after the decree was issued. The decree followed the consecration of four bishops without authorization from the Pope.

The society stated that the appeal is a requirement before filing a hierarchical recourse. According to the group, the filing invokes Canon 1353 of the Code of Canon Law, which suspends the execution of the decree while the appeal is processed. The society noted that the request is intended to rectify an administrative act that the group considers harmful.

This legal action follows a letter sent to Pope Leo XIV on July 3, in which the society rejected the excommunications.
