The Life and Legacy of Fulton Sheen

Archbishop Fulton Sheen reached millions of viewers through radio and television to explain Catholic teaching and the Gospel. According to Rome Reports, Sheen used the Catholic Hour radio program for two decades before launching his weekly television show, Life Is Worth Living, in 1952. The television program reached an estimated 30 million people each week and earned him an Emmy Award.

Beyond broadcasting, Sheen worked as an author, professor, bishop, and missionary advocate. Bishop Louis Tylka, the current bishop of Peoria, noted that Sheen addressed contemporary topics while speaking the truth of the Gospel. Tylka, who leads the diocese Sheen once served, said Sheen's work inspires Catholic leaders to find new ways to communicate the faith. Sheen died in 1979.
