Briefing and sources: Kotido Bishop Calls For Irrigation Systems To Combat Recurring Hunger In Karamoja. Diocese of Lira

Bishop Dominic Eibu of the Kotido Catholic Diocese has asked the government to invest in irrigation systems to address recurring food shortages in the Karamoja sub-region. He made the request during a visit to St. Peter Anai Catholic Parish in the Lira Diocese on Sunday, October 25, 2026.

The bishop stated that while food donations provide immediate relief, irrigation is necessary to help farmers grow crops during the prolonged dry spells that have affected the region since May. He noted that these systems would reduce dependence on seasonal rainfall and strengthen long-term food security for communities relying on rain-fed agriculture.

During his visit, Eibu also thanked the Lira Diocese for donating food to help communities in Karamoja. These donations followed requests for assistance from the Kotido and Moroto dioceses as food shortages worsened in the area.

Briefing and sources: Lira Diocese Calls on Christians to Embrace Caritas as a Way of Life. Diocese of Lira

Lira Diocese held an induction workshop on October 27, 2026, to train Caritas parish and sub-parish coordinators on their roles in community development. The workshop included deans, coordinators from the Lay Apostolate, the Women’s Desk, and the Justice and Peace Commission.

Diocesan Pastoral Coordinator Father Vincent Orum told participants that Caritas is the expression of the Church's charity and service rather than a separate ministry or association. He stated that all Christians have a responsibility to practice charity and share resources with those in need because of their baptism.

The orientation aimed to clarify coordinator responsibilities and improve the coordination of development initiatives across the diocese. Participants were encouraged to plan in the spirit of synodality to strengthen collaboration between diocesan structures and local Christian communities.
