Pope Leo XIV meets with 7 abuse victims

Pope Leo XIV met privately with seven abuse victims for two hours at the bishop’s residence in Lourdes on September 27. During the meeting, the Pope listened to their personal stories, the suffering they endured, and their suggestions for preventing future abuse. The Holy See Press Office noted that some victims experienced abuse involving the silence or complicity of those meant to help them.

Speaking to journalists during his return flight to Rome, the Pope said the Church has a particular responsibility to support victims and help them find healing. He described sexual abuse within the Church as a problem that deeply wounds or destroys a person's life of faith. While some victims spoke of systemic abuse, the Pope described it as certain organizations within the Church acting abusively as a system.

The Pope asked the victims to share with others that the Church is personally and institutionally available to listen to and accompany survivors on their path to healing. He also spent time in prayer with some of the individuals during the meeting.
