Pope Leo XIV appeals for peace in Tigray

Pope Leo XIV called for dialogue during a general audience on September 30, 2026, following renewed hostilities in the Tigray and Amhara regions. The Pope stated that conflict only worsens problems and leaves behind death and destruction. He urged all parties to choose dialogue and requested that the international community provide timely humanitarian aid to those in need.

The appeal follows reports that Tigray People’s Liberation Front forces took control of airports on September 23 and launched attacks toward the neighboring Amhara and Afar regions.

During the same audience, the Pope spoke about the recent beatification of three martyr priests in Bologna. Ubaldo Marchioni, Elia Comini, and Martino Capelli were killed in 1944 for their ministry to parishioners. The Pope said their sacrifice demonstrates the courage required to stand with others during times of trial.
