The Vatican Press Office stated Monday that a lung nodule discovered in Pope Leo XIV was found during routine medical checkups rather than an emergency or sudden health decline. The Pope is scheduled to undergo surgery this week to remove the nodule, which he announced on Sunday.

Despite the upcoming procedure, the Pope maintained his regular work schedule on Monday. His planned meetings included receiving Monsignor Martin Krebs, the Apostolic Nuncio to Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Monaco, and Cardinal Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi, the president of Caritas Internationalis.

The Pope's Monday agenda also included audiences with Monsignor Jorge Eduardo Lozano, the Archbishop of San Juan de Cuyo, Monsignor Michael Francis Crotty, the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, and Monsignor Timothy Broglio, the Archbishop for the Military Services of the United States.
