Vatican Surgery of Pope Leo XIV

Why Will Pope Leo XIV Undergo Surgery at Gemelli? Here's What the Popes' Hospital Is Like

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV will undergo surgery at the Gemelli Polyclinic to remove a lung nodule, according to a report by Rome Reports. The pope stated he decided to proceed with the operation following medical advice. Doctors have not yet determined if the nodule is benign or malignant.

The Gemelli Polyclinic has a long history of treating popes. In 1934, Pope Pius XI donated 37 hectares for the construction of the medical school, which has grown from 70 beds to more than 1,500. The hospital famously treated Pope John Paul II following his shooting in 1981 and hosted him for several subsequent hospitalizations and surgeries throughout his pontificate.
