Pope Leo XIV met with delegations from municipalities in Central Italy affected by earthquakes ten years ago. During the audience at the Vatican Apostolic Palace on October 31, the pope called for urgent and concrete responses to accelerate the reconstruction of these areas.

The pope stated that rebuilding requires more than good intentions or disorganized volunteerism. He noted that communities must possess a vision to discern a blueprint for homes and cities amidst the ruins. He urged leaders to ensure that reconstruction is fast, safe, and transparent, emphasizing the need to rebuild the foundations that give a community meaning.

In his address, the pope referenced the Book of Nehemiah and the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas to highlight the importance of shared responsibility and a prophetic gaze. He encouraged the delegates to continue building together through solidarity and commitment, citing the examples of great saints from the region.

Bishop Marian Eleganti criticized the Vatican for restricting access to St. Peter's Basilica for traditionalist pilgrims during the Ad Petri Sedem pilgrimage on October 24, 2026.

The former auxiliary bishop stated that the ban on traditionalist pilgrims entering the basilica borders on hostility toward Catholics who remain faithful to the Pope. He argued that the restrictions were not caused by operational difficulties or concerns for Church unity. Eleganti noted that existing rites within the Catholic Church coexist peacefully with the Novus Ordo.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni told The Pillar on October 29 that he was unaware of letters published by an Italian traditionalist blog regarding the Ad Petri Sedem pilgrimage to St. Peter’s Basilica. The letters, published October 28, appear to contradict previous statements from the Holy See concerning the group's requests for accommodations during their pilgrimage.

The dispute involves the Vatican's decision to deny the group permission to conduct a procession or adoration liturgy inside the basilica on October 24. Last week, the Holy See Press Office stated that while the request to process into the basilica was rejected, the group should have made a specific request if they wanted to hold Eucharistic adoration or prayer time inside.

However, a letter dated September 8, published by the blog Messa in Latino, indicates that organizers had asked the Secretariat of State for specific accommodations. The release of these documents follows several months of exchanges between pilgrimage organizers and the Vatican regarding the group's ability to celebrate Mass or process into the basilica as they have in previous years.

The National Association of Shrines and the religious tourism section of the National Office for Catechesis will hold "The Night of the Shrines" on Saturday, October 31. This year marks the first time the event will take place on the eve of the Solemnity of All Saints, rather than in early June.

Approximately 150 events are scheduled across Italy, including prayer vigils, pilgrimages, testimonies, and cultural or artistic activities. The theme for the 2026 edition is "Aspire to holiness, wherever you are," which references words from a homily given by Pope Leo XIV on August 3, 2025. Father Marco Fagotti, who oversees the religious tourism section, stated that the October date was chosen because shrines are locations where holiness is experienced through connections to saints, relics, and faith experiences.

The Pontifical Basilica of Saint Anthony will participate by opening its doors for prayer and Eucharistic adoration from 21:00 to approximately 22:15. The basilica's rector, Father Antonio Ramina, confirmed the community's participation in the national initiative. Since its inception in 2019, the project has sought to promote shrines as centers for evangelization and pilgrimage.

The Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has warned of a danger of extremism in the liturgical sphere. In a summary of a meeting held on October 21 with bishops from Panama during their ad limina visit, the dicastery stated that certain groups of the faithful provoke division and confusion by raising issues such as the use of veils by women or receiving Communion on the hand or while kneeling.

The dicastery noted that these groups tend to instrumentalize the Eucharistic celebration, reaffirming that the Eucharist is a sacrament of unity and cannot become an object of contention.

During the same meeting, the Panamanian bishops reported incorrect practices regarding Eucharistic adoration, noting a risk of it becoming a highly individual form of worship detached from the celebration of the Eucharist. The bishops also identified a tendency to lengthen celebrations with added gestures, prayers, and responses.

A report from the pontifical charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) states that 220 million Christians worldwide are directly exposed to persecution, discrimination, and violence. The report, titled "Persecuted and Forgotten? A Report on Christians Oppressed for Their Faith 2024-2026," covers the period from August 2024 to June 2026. It finds that conditions for Christians worsened in approximately 55% of the 18 countries examined, and none of those countries recorded an overall improvement.

The study notes that 413 million Christians live in nations where serious violations of religious freedom occur, placing them at risk. Persecution takes various forms, including arbitrary arrests, discriminatory laws, restrictions on worship, confiscation of Church property, kidnappings, forced conversions, sexual violence, torture, and murder. In many instances, these actions target specific regions where the state is unable or unwilling to protect minorities.

The report identifies extremist violence, authoritarian governments, and religious nationalism as primary drivers of pressure on Christian communities. Africa remains a major center of violence, while growing concerns exist regarding conditions in Asia and forced displacement. Conflict in Africa and Asia is driving many Christians to flee their homes.

Wadie Abunassar, director of the International Center for Consultations, stated that while Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc appears to be winning, the results suggest Israel has lost. Speaking to Agenzia SIR during the Israeli legislative election count, Abunassar noted that although the partial results show Netanyahu's supporters holding 54 seats, it remains premature to draw final conclusions.

With 76.8% of ballots counted, the coalition led by Gadi Eisenkot holds 47 seats, while Arab parties have reached 19 seats. Abunassar noted that Arab parties may act as decisive factors for the next government. He cautioned that the remaining votes from the "double envelope" system, used primarily by military and diplomatic personnel, could affect the allocation of approximately 15 seats.

Abunassar observed that Netanyahu's bloc might strengthen its parliamentary presence but noted it is unlikely to reach the 61 seats required to form a government alone. He also suggested that the results indicate a possible alternative led by Eisenkot.

Pope Leo XIV sent a video message to participants of the international meeting "Unarmed and Disarming Peace" in Assisi, held from October 25 to 27, 2026. The Pope was unable to attend the meeting in person to prioritize recovery following surgery to remove lung adenocarcinoma on October 13.

In his message, the Pope addressed religious leaders, Patriarchs, Bishop Felice Accrocca of Assisi, and the Franciscan families. He noted that the gathering took place forty years after the World Day of Prayer for Peace initiated by Saint John Paul II in 1986. He thanked the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue and the Community of Sant’Egidio for their work in continuing the path established by his predecessors.

The Pope called for a deepening of the "spirit of Assisi," which he defined as the rejection of religious justifications for war, a spirit of mediation and dialogue, and creative action for a peaceful future. He noted that while some argued globalization would ensure peace, his encyclical, *Magnifica humanitas*, observed that globalization instead triggered fundamentalist and nationalist reactions. He warned that many still view the accumulation of weapons as a means to guarantee peace, a trend he described as a culture of power.

The Vatican denied permission for the 15th annual Ad Petri Sedem pilgrimage to hold a procession into St. Peter's Basilica and celebrate Mass on October 24, 2026.

Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office, stated that the application for the procession was not specific enough. Bruni noted that the request referred exclusively to the procession, which is not ordinarily permitted for visiting dioceses. He added that if organizers had requested an alternative activity, such as Eucharistic adoration or prayer, they should have made a specific request for those purposes.

The Secretariat of State previously informed organizers that the basilica was unavailable for the celebration of Mass this year. According to correspondence, the request for Mass was sent to the Vatican by chaplain Claude Barthe. While participants were prevented from entering the basilica for the procession, Bishop Athanasius Schneider celebrated Mass at another basilica.

Briefing and sources: Nepal flood, two months after. Caritas Italiana

Official figures report more than 1,450 deaths and over 5,500 missing people two months after a mudslide and flood devastated 42 kilometers of territory in Nepal. The disaster, which occurred on August 26, 2026, affected areas from the Tibet autonomous region border to the Dadhing district, destroying riverbeds in the Raswa and Nuwakot districts.

Caritas Italiana reports that the flood caused extensive damage to housing, infrastructure, and the local economy. Seven of the 14 hydroelectric plants in the region were completely destroyed. The disaster also impacted the trade route to China, which previously moved tons of goods daily through the affected area.

The riverbed has risen from 4 meters to 12 meters due to accumulated debris, making reconstruction difficult. While temporary bridges now allow access to remote areas and survivors have found shelter in reception centers or with relatives, the scale of the loss to commercial and government buildings remains significant.

Gershon Baskin, an Israeli analyst and activist, stated that the role of Arab political parties will be decisive in forming an alternative to Benjamin Netanyahu following the Israeli legislative elections. Baskin noted that while voters across Jewish and Arab society may have voted against Netanyahu and his religious right coalition, the primary challenge remains whether anti-Netanyahu forces are willing to collaborate with Arab parties to form a government.

Partial data from the Central Election Commission shows that 72.4% of ballots have been counted. The block supporting Netanyahu holds 54 seats, while the group led by Gadi Eisenkot has 48 seats. Arab parties have reached a total of 18 seats, aided by growth in the Ra’am party. Several groups, including Reservists, People of Israel, and Charedi Public, remain below the 3.25% electoral threshold. The final results depend on the completion of the count, including military votes cast via double envelopes.

Brazilian bishops reminded President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of his responsibility to the entire Brazilian people, including those who voted for other candidates. The statement followed the second round of presidential elections, in which Lula was reelected with 51.79% of the vote against Flávio Bolsonaro, who received 48.21%.

Lula's victory marks the first time since the end of the military dictatorship that a candidate who placed second in the first round has won the runoff. The president will serve his fourth term, which will be his second consecutive term, in a parliament that is more right-leaning than it was four years ago. While Flávio Bolsonaro initially questioned the election results following voting delays, his party accepted the outcome on Monday.

Bishop Athanasius Schneider delivered a homily during the 15th Peregrinatio ad Petri Sedem on Saturday, October 24, at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The Mass for the pilgrims was celebrated in the traditional Roman Rite.

During the homily, Bishop Schneider stated that Saint Pius V canonized the traditional rite of the Mass in a certain sense. He noted that the pontiff guaranteed the perpetual use of the traditional form of the Mass for all priests of the Roman Rite through the apostolic constitution Quo Primum. Schneider also spoke of the feelings of traditional Catholics, describing them as people who feel treated like second-class Catholics and feel misunderstood by the Church in Rome, though they do not hold resentment.

The celebration took place at Santa Maria Maggiore because the Secretariat of State did not authorize the pilgrimage Mass to be held at Saint Peter's Basilica this year. The Secretariat also prohibited a procession in Saint Peter's Basilica on that same Saturday. Schneider referenced the basilica as the house of Mary and noted that saints and popes, including Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Pope Pius XII, celebrated Mass there. He concluded by asking the Virgin Mary to grant the Church liturgical peace.

The Vatican Secretariat of State has barred participants of the 15th International Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage from entering St. Peter's Basilica for a procession to pray at the tomb of the Apostle. Christian Marquant, president of the association Paix Liturgique, stated that a letter from the Secretariat of State informed organizers that the procession was not allowed to enter the basilica.

Organizers had previously been told earlier this year that they could not celebrate a Mass using the 1962 Missal in St. Peter's Basilica. While the Basilica had initially indicated the group could enter for a brief Eucharistic blessing, the final decision prohibited the procession. Approximately 1,500 pilgrims were affected by the refusal of both the procession and the request for a Pontifical Mass.

The pilgrimage, held in Rome from October 23 to 25, 2026, includes priests, religious, and lay faithful from various countries. Due to the restrictions at St. Peter's, the Mass was scheduled to be celebrated at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major. Peter Kwasniewski, a Catholic writer and speaker, criticized the Vatican's decisions, noting that the group was also informed that the Mass at Saint Mary Major could only last one hour.

The event includes approximately 150 scheduled appointments across Italy, such as prayer vigils, pilgrimages, testimonies, and artistic and cultural moments. Organizers changed the date this year from early June to October 31 to align the event with the eve of the Solemnity of All Saints. Don Marco Fagotti, who is in charge of the Sezione Turismo religioso of the Ufficio Catechistico Nazionale, stated that the date was chosen because shrines are places where holiness is experienced through connections to saints, relics, and faith experiences.

The project began in 2019 to promote shrines as places for evangelization, welcome, and pilgrimage. The theme for this year is "Aspirate alla santità, ovunque siate." The initiative also maintains a connection to the Giornata Mondiale di Preghiera per le Vocazioni by offering reflections on discernment and Church charisms.

Israel holds national elections for the 120 seats of the Knesset on October 27. More than 7 million voters are eligible to participate in the vote.

The election features a contest between two primary political blocs. One bloc is led by Benjamin Netanyahu and includes far-right parties, while the opposition bloc is led by former General Gadi Eisenkot. Harel Arnon, a constitutional lawyer and expert in electoral law, noted that the decisive outcome will be which bloc secures a majority to form a government rather than which individual party finishes first. Arnon also observed that the current political system is highly polarized, with few parties available to act as bridges between the two sides.

The vote occurs during a period of regional instability. Analysts suggest the results will be decisive for the country and for stability in the region. Current polls favor those advocating for change.

Briefing and sources: Diocese of Melfi–Rapolla–Venosa publishes guide to diocesan curia. Diocese of Melfi–Rapolla–Venosa

The Diocese of Melfi–Rapolla–Venosa has published a guide to its diocesan curia to explain the roles and functions of the offices that assist the bishop.

The document describes the curia as a community of priests, deacons, consecrated persons, and lay faithful who collaborate with the bishop in his ministry of teaching, sanctifying, and guiding the people of God. According to the guide, the curia consists of the bodies and individuals that help the bishop govern the diocese by directing pastoral action, managing administration, and exercising judicial power.

The guide notes that the bishop coordinates the activity of the curia to ensure all offices work harmoniously for the good of the diocese. He may assign this coordination to a moderator of the curia or establish an episcopal council composed of vicars to promote unified pastoral action. The general vicar works across the entire territory, while episcopal vicars assist in specific sectors, zones, or for particular groups of the faithful.

The Bishop of Rimini issued a letter to the diocese regarding the 2026/2027 pastoral visit. In the letter, the bishop noted that the upcoming visit follows a previous encounter with Pope Leo XIV.

The letter connects the current pastoral visit to the renewal process of the universal Church. The bishop cited the teachings of Pope Francis in the encyclical *Evangelii Gaudium* and Pope Leo XIV in the encyclical *Magnifica Humanitas*. Andrea Riccardi, founder of the Community of Sant'Egidio, delivered the opening address for the 2026 Spirit of Assisi. During his speech, Riccardi called for a transition from an era of conflict to a period of dialogue.

Riccardi noted that the 2026 gathering commemorates the meeting of religious leaders held in Assisi on October 27, 1986. He observed that while the 1986 meeting occurred during a time when peace was a central political goal, modern history increasingly treats war as a natural occurrence.

The address referenced Pope John Paul II, who sought to establish the 1986 meeting as a day of peace. Riccardi cited the late pope's view that a religious attitude is intrinsically linked to the pursuit of peace. He stated that while peace is rooted in various religious traditions, it is often obscured by historical events.
